Shaping its business processes, offices, products and services around the principles of sustainability in order to leave a better world for future generations, Türk Telekom views the active participation of employees, their families, suppliers and customers in this process as an integral part of its strategy.

Türk Telekom is a member of FTSE4GOOD Index Series and BIST Sustainability Index.

Sustainability in Business Processes

Well aware of the social and environmental impact of its high level of energy consumption, Türk Telekom attach importance to undertake investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy in order to use natural resources efficiently, to extend the use of renewables, and to minimize adverse impacts on nature.

By using solar and wind energy, the company is able to make carbon savings. In order to boost energy efficiency and reliability, the company replaces less efficient DC energy equipment with high efficiency models. Similarly, with central transformation/FiberkenTT project, central with low energy efficiency are replaced with next-generation centrals and outdoor equipment with high-energy efficiency.

Türk Telekom reduces carbon emissions by replacing air conditioners in system rooms with next generation Free-Cooling air conditioning units with low energy consumption. The Smart Metering Project enables the Company to monitor energy consumption in detail, and when necessary, in real time. In addition, services formerly running on older generation systems unavailable for technical support and maintenance were transferred onto next-generation transmission systems. The results of this modification were improvements at the maintenance facility, energy savings, hall upgrades and increased service quality.

Continued participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project

Türk Telekom strives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by offering products and services that support the low carbon economy, and extends support to various sectors with products and service solutions with low carbon emissions. Greenhouse gas management and efforts to tackle climate change are important issues for the company and are included in the company’s overall strategy. Goal of Türk Telekom at this stage is to set an example for the sector in fighting climate change and continue to be the facilitator to the companies in other sectors.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an international organization with the largest climate change database in the world, which reports globally on how climate change risks are being managed by companies every year. It evaluates the responses of participating companies with regard to the management of environmental risks according to the CDP methodology, which is an environmental data rating methodology. Companies with high environmental awareness share records of their greenhouse gas emissions, their water resources management and their climate change strategies with investors through the CDP in order to determine their mitigation targets and to enhance their performances. This report provides guidance on how global investors can benefit from the climate data in order to make more accurate investment decisions.

Similar to high performance companies reporting worldwide, Türk Telekom also participates in the CDP. Reporting to the CDP for the first time in 2011, Türk Telekom was the first Turkish telecommunications company to take part in this global initiative. Türk Telekom reported to the CDP between 2010 and 2011 and started to report to the CDP in 2017. Türk Telekom report submitted to the CDP was assessed at the D (Disclosure) level in 2017.

In the responses of Türk Telekom for the 2018 CDP report, the company disclosed on the projects to increase its energy savings and renewable energy use, to reduce its fuel consumption and carbon monoxide emissions, and its annual energy saving objectives, Smart City projects, Cloud Eye technology and projects that have a positive impact on climate change. This reporting resulted in an improvement in the rating from D+ to the C+ (Awareness) level.

The departments throughout Türk Telekom have annual emission reduction targets and the realizations are regularly monitored.

Türk Telekom’s objective is to set the strategic emission reduction targets that will cover 5 and 10-year periods until the next reporting period, and further reduce carbon emissions that can be managed through the Company and to ensure that the emission calculations are verified by an authorized institution.

Türk Telekom has annual targets to reduce electricity and fuel consumption. Despite the increase in network capacity, the annual electricity consumption of the fixed network edged down from 800 million kWh in 2016 to 790 million kWh in 2017 thanks to the efficiency and savings projects implemented.

In 2018, targets for reducing annual electricity consumption were set by the senior management and relevant employees. Despite the growth in the number of customers, frequency bandwidth and capacity utilization, the Company decreased its electricity consumption by 2.2% yoy to 773 million kWh. Türk Telekom is amongst the few operators that decreased electricity consumption in the world in the past five years. In addition, Building Automation Systems were installed in ten buildings in 2018, with a target to cut fuel costs in the related units by 15%.

Sustainability in Offices

In the context of sustainability in offices, building/hall optimization projects provide significant savings in space savings and consequently in energy consumption for cooling. In addition, with the use of energy saving bulbs, heat insulation and jacketing, public transportation, building automation, an environmentally friendly vehicle fleet, paper recycling, electronic document and documentation system (EDITT), central printing systems, e-learning, telepresence and video conference usage, recycling, savings and reducing carbon emissions are ensured.

Türk Telekom is taking various steps not only to control its own activities but also to raise awareness. The implementation of e-billing within the scope of environmental products also offers the benefit of a reduction in customer carbon footprint.

DX Air Conditioning Transformation project: Air conditioning systems have been replaced with new generation energy efficient conditioning systems. As a result of this transformation, operation costs and energy consumption levels have decreased.

Türk Telekom is running efficiency and reduction activities and investing in newer technologies which could enable reduction in GHG emissions due to our operations.

Türk Telekom Technology Center and Türk Telekom Esentepe Campus received the "LEED Gold Certificate".

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Efficiency Design) is an environmentally-friendly building certificate developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The LEED certification is the most preferred certification in the world and Turkey.

Today, environmental problems such as global warming and clean water supply have become increasingly serious, and environmentally friendly/sustainable buildings have become important. Environmentally friendly buildings not only provide energy and water savings but also place great importance on the health and comfort of the residents.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmentally Friendly Design (LEED) certification, developed by the Green Building Council in the USA, is awarded to buildings fulfilling a number of criteria. Today, LEED is the most common, most reliable and valid "Green Building Certificate System" in the world. The aim is to make our world more liveable by creating green buildings and premises that respect humanity and nature.

Our Istanbul - Ümraniye Technology Center Building and Esentepe A Block were designed according to the criteria and construction applications implemented. Thus, the Türk Telekom Ümraniye Technology Center and Türk Telekom Esentepe A Block have been awarded "LEED GOLD Certificate”, taking their place among a limited number of office projects in the world.

Some of the sustainable strategies and solutions envisaged in the projects of Türk Telekom Technology Center and Türk Telekom Esentepe within the scope of LEED System are the following;

Factors with a direct impact on human health such as monitoring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, indoor air quality, natural lighting, waste management, temperature and humidity control are taken into consideration while methods used in building constructions provide a cleaner environment for the end user. In addition to energy and water savings, contribution has been made to the health and comfort of our staff.

  • A reduction in the heat island effect has been intended by choosing light coloured roofing materials for the Türk Telekom Technology Center and Türk Telekom Esentepe and Gayrettepe buildings.
  • Our buildings are located in a position with a high concentration of social facilities within walking distance in the vicinity.
  • A sufficient amount of safe bike parks have been created for the building users, thus supporting the use of alternative transportation and the use of individual vehicles was reduced, and sports facilities have been established.
  • The water used in the building is efficient and comfortable, and high-tech water faucets provide water efficiency at international standards without sacrificing user comfort.
  • The building has achieved a reduction in water consumption of over 40% as a result of the efficient water faucets in use.
  • Energy efficiency has been prioritised in all service systems used within the scope of the project. Without sacrificing comfort, the most savings can be made with energy efficient lighting fixtures, efficient heating, cooling devices.
  • The lighting fixtures in the project have been designed to provide over 90% more sunlight than the installed power and operate with presence sensors.
  • Within the scope of the project, environmentally friendly refrigerants which do not damage the ozone layer have been preferred in the cooling systems.
  • For all building materials used in the building, those with sustainable and environmentally friendly properties have been preferred.
  • In the project, recycling points per floor have been created.
  • At least 50% by weight of waste materials occurring during construction have been reused or sent to recycling.
  • Within the scope of the project, materials with more than 10% recycled content were used.
  • During the building's construction, local materials that have positive characteristics in terms of cost, transportation and environmentalism were used at a rate of over 20%.
  • In this context, building chemicals (paint, primer, adhesive, putty etc.) to be used in the building were selected from those with VOC (volatile organic harmful compound) ratios in accordance with international limits.
  • The fresh air rates given in the buildings have been kept above the ASHRAE 62.1 standard, with the building users expected to live in a healthy and comfortable environment.
  • Emphasis is placed on individual control in heating and lighting systems, aiming to increase both energy savings and interior life quality.
  • When the interior design of the building is made, care has been taken for residents of the building to be able to easily see the outside from where they are located.
  • In our company, the provision of ground impermeability, grills for water drainage, interception channels and similar collection systems for the prevention of pollution that may arise from contact of hazardous and non-hazardous waste is mandatory.
  • It is forbidden to directly or indirectly emit, store, move, remove all waste and surplus and carry out similar activities in a manner contrary to the standards and methods determined in the related regulations in such a way as to cause harm to the environment.
  • Other activities of our company related to waste management includes taking of necessary precautions in its activities to minimize the production of waste and sorting of waste at its source.
