Total broadband subscribers exceeded 76.6 million at the end of the fourth quarter of 2019. In Turkey, fixed broadband usage has increased considerably thanks to the leadership of Türk Telekom’s infrastructure investments since 2005, and accordingly, the number of fixed broadband subscribers increased to 14.2 million. Fiber technology (FTTH/FTTB) increased by 14.7% year on year with number of subscribers reaching 3.2 million as of fourth quarter of 2019. Additionally, the number of XDSL subscribers was 9.7 million and there was also 1.1 million cable subscribers at the end of Q4’19. Compared to OECD average of 30.9% fixed broadband population penetration rate, Turkey has important growth potential with its 17.1% penetration rate.
Investments for fiber optic infrastructure have increased in the country in recent years. Türk Telekom with its 304 thousand kilometer fiber network has the widest fiber infrastructure in Turkey. Alternative operators’ fiber length was 86.6 thousand kilometer at the end of Q4’19.
On the mobile broadband side, the total number of users was 62.4 million corresponding to 75.0% population penetration rate at the end of Q4’19. Mobile broadband users via mobile phones reached 61.7 million while mobile broadband users via non-phone mobile devices were 723 thousand. Compared to OECD average of 109.7% mobile broadband penetration rate, Turkey has important growth potential in terms of mobile broadband penetration.
The total number of mobile phone subscribers in Turkey was 80.8 million corresponding to 97.2% penetration rate at the end of Q4’19. Share of prepaid subscribers was 38% in Turkey in Q4’19 whereas it is around 30% in Europe.
On 26 August 2015, the Auction for IMT Services and Infrastructures Authorization was held by ICTA. Excluding VAT, total auction fee for 365.4 MHz of spectrum across 18 packages in 5 separate frequency bands (800, 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600 MHz) was EUR 3,356 mn. Following the auction, the current frequency allocated to mobile operators increased from 184 MHz to 549 MHz. Operators launched IMT services as of 1 April 2016. At the end of Q4’19, number of active LTE subscribers in Turkey reached 46.5 million.
There were 11.5 million fixed voice subscribers corresponding to 13.9% penetration rate in Turkey at the end of Q4’19. Given the average household size of 3.4 in Turkey, a significant portion of the population uses fixed voice services.
